Guilty Acts

We stopped by the Black & White Gallery in New York to check out the opening reception for artist Tamara Kostianovsky’s solo debut, Actus Reus.

Born in Israel and raised in Argentina, the Brooklyn-based artist Tamara Kostianovsky transformed the Black & White Gallery in Chelsea into a simulated meat locker with her thought-provoking collection of animal carcasses made from discarded clothing. Her solo debut, Actus Reus—Latin for “guilty act”—is the second installent in the gallery’s three-part Spring series, The Proper Animal, which “addresses the complex issues of animal propriety in the context of human-animal power relations.”

Artist Asja Jung kicked things off with her solo debut, Mating Season, and Julian Montague will wrap up the program with To Know The Spiders, which opens on June 5. An opening reception was held for Kostianovsky’s show on April 17.

Actus Reus is on view through May 24 at Black & White Gallery, 636 W. 28th Street, Ground Floor. Call 212.244.3007 for more info.
