Uprising
“We do not want any clashes with police … We will go around them, we will go through them,” Christoph Kleine, a spokesman for the protest network Block NATO, told The Associated Press. “We will not attack them. But we will make our way.”
Twenty-eight heads of state and government leaders were in Strasbourg, France and Baden-Baden, Germany from April 3-5 for the two-day NATO summit. In addition to the meeting, a ceremony was held at the French-German border to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the military alliance.
In response to these events, thousands of activists from throughout Europe converged on Strasbourg to protest both NATO and to also call for peace. Police detained approximately 300 protesters. Berlin-based photojournalist Gordon Welters was in Strasbourg to document the protests.
